A good rule of thumb is if you see a bottle of dessert wine from Tokaj on the shelf at your neighbourhood wine store, and it is within your budget, BUY IT. No dinner is complete without a glass of sweet wine, and few are as satisfying as the those from Tokaj, a traditional sweet wine region in Hungary.
Fun fact – the Tokaj region is thought to have been the first winemaking region in the world to have adopted a classification system for their wines. And, by royal decree, the Disznoko estate was classified as a first growth property in 1772, at the time of the initial classification. The estate’s vineyards today—now over 250 acres— are still wholly classified as first growth.
Tokaj wines are most often made from botrytized (botrytis or noble rot is a fungus – but the good kind) and shriveled Furmint grapes. The 2017 Disznoko Late Harvest Furmint was only aged for a few months in traditional Hungarian oak casks. This shorter ageing preserved the wine’s powerful, fresh and fruity aromas and flavours of ripe stone and citrus fruits, as well as its vitality and freshness. At 127g/L, its residual sugar is lower than many other Tokaj wines, and the sweetness is in perfect balance with its vibrant acidity.
This is a fresh and modern Tokaj wine. Serve it alongside almond cookies or shortbread. Available in select LCBO stores for a limited time - $26.95
